The higher up and free of obstructions your Hotspot is, the more connections it should be able to make. This is why it is recommended to place your Hotspot in the highest window of your home. Radio Waves travel further if they have an uninterrupted line of sight. The network favors broad coverage, so in general, it is better to be further than 300 meters versus being too close. Inside 300 meters and your Hotspots will compete with each other for roles in PoC challenges, too far outside 300 meters and your Hotspot won’t connect. The general rule of thumb is that there should be 300 meters between two Hotspots in any direction. More connections mean more challenges to partake in and witness. We will discuss throughout this post how location and positioning are critical to mining profits, which is largely because a good location and antenna positioning are the best ways to reach more Hotspots. Since Hotspots with other nearby Hotspots will automatically initiate challenges quite frequently, being the challenger is the least lucrative role. The challengee must now send packets of information that pertain to the challenge, and other nearby Hotspots will play the Witness by verifying that the correct data is being sent.Īs we can see from the table, the witness is by far the most profitable role to play in PoC challenges with being the challengee coming in second. The Hotspot that initiates this challenge is the challenger, and the Hotspot it is challenging is the challengee. Hotspots generally will initiate a challenge to a random Hotspot every 3 hours this rate can change depending on the network in that area. These challenges consist of three distinct roles: challenger, challengee, and witnesses. PoC challenges are the actual unit of work that is completed to satisfy the PoC protocol, which is a unique version of Proof of Work. The largest portion of a Hotspot’s earnings comes from the Proof of Stake Challenges. Also, Network Data Transfer accounts for up to 32.5% of minted HNT and currently accounts for very little of what a miner earns as the network grows and more devices start using it, Data Transfer should play a larger role in a Hotspot’s job. The HNT rewarded for Security Tokens goes to stakers of HNT, not miners. Let’s take a look at our two contestants: Polished Ceramic Capybara (Capybara) and Ripe Pickle Bat (Bat). Providing a decentralized wireless network to connected devices addresses several major issues that exist in the tech world like monopolistic wireless providers, invasive data collection, and lack of coverage availability. Helium is one of my favorite blockchain concepts.
